What’s Up ‘Doc’?

Experience this iconic B-29 Superfortress in the AIR, on the GROUND & in the COCKPIT!

Who’s ‘Doc’? ‘Doc’ is a B-29 Superfortress and one of 1,644 manufactured in Wichita, Kansas during World War II. Since 1987 when Tony Mazzolini found Doc sitting and rotting away in the Mojave Desert, hundreds of volunteers have worked on Doc and the massive restoration project. Skilled workers and retirees from Wichita’s aviation industry, veterans, active-duty military, and others wanting to honor those who served, have spent tens of thousands of hours on Doc’s restoration. Countless individuals and organizations also made financial and in-kind contributions to keep the project going.

This stunning beast (141-foot wingspan) is heading to Mather Airport this October to mesmerize Airshow attendees in the air & on the ground, but YOU can also experience this rare World War II bomber from the cockpit by purchasing a memorable ride in it during Airshow week. Get all the details on rides here.

Watch how ‘Doc’ came back to life in the video below.

The B-29 Superfortress also has a history at Mather Airport. With confidence growing for an Allied victory in World War II, Mather’s training activities were terminated in 1944 and the base became a major port of embarkation for troops and aircraft destined for the Pacific. By June of 1945, 234 B-29 Superfortresses and over 200 other combat aircraft, including the B-25 Mitchell, B-17 Flying Fortress, AT-6 Texan, C-47 Skytrain, C-46 Commando and many more, had been processed through Mather enroute to the Pacific and ultimate victory. Check out the picture below of 32 B-29s parked at Mather Air Force Base in November 1945.

We look forward to welcoming ‘Doc’ and shining a light on the Sacramento region’s aviation heritage this October 1-2. But ‘Doc’ is just one piece of the Airshow’s theme this year…can you take a guess on what we will be commemorating?
