Not one, not two, but ALL THREE of Travis Air Force’s heavies (C-5, C-17 & KC-10) will take to the sky in what we like to call the ‘Parade of Heavies.’ Feel the power, hear the roar and awe at the sheer size of these massive beasts as they make a ceremonial pass over Show Center. You don’t want to miss it!
C-5M Super Galaxy
The C-5M Super Galaxy is a strategic transport aircraft and is the largest aircraft in the Air Force inventory. Its primary mission is to transport cargo and personnel for the Department of Defense.
It is equipped with five sets of landing gear, 28 wheels, four commercial engines, and a state-of-the-art maintenance diagnostics system. Both the nose and aft doors open, allowing ground crews to simultaneously load and off-load cargo from both ends, reducing cargo transfer times. The full-width drive-on ramps at each end enable double rows of vehicles to be transported.
The C-5M, has a cargo load of 281,001 pounds (or 3,222,857 tortillas), can fly 2,150 nautical miles, offload, and fly to a second base 500 nautical miles away from the original destination — all without aerial refueling.
C-17 Globemaster III
The C-17 Globemaster III is the most flexible cargo aircraft to enter the airlift force. The C-17 is capable of rapid strategic delivery of troops and all types of cargo to main operating bases. The aircraft can perform tactical airlift and airdrop missions and can transport ambulatory patients during aeromedical evacuations.
The aircraft is operated by a crew of three (pilot, co-pilot and loadmaster), reducing manpower requirements, risk exposure and long-term operating costs. Cargo is loaded onto the C-17 through a large aft ramp and door system that accommodates equipment such as battle tanks, armored vehicles, trucks and trailers. The C-17 is designed to airdrop 102 paratroopers with their accompanying equipment.
KC-10 Extender
The KC-10 Extender is an Air Mobility Command advanced tanker and cargo aircraft designed to provide increased global mobility for U.S. armed forces. Although the KC-l0’s primary mission is aerial refueling, it can combine the tasks of a tanker and cargo aircraft by refueling fighters and simultaneously carry the fighter support personnel and equipment on overseas deployments.
In addition to the three main wing fuel tanks, the KC-10 has three large fuel tanks under the cargo floor, one under the forward lower cargo compartment, one in the center wing area and one under the rear compartment. Combined, the capacity of the six tanks carries more than 356,000 pounds of fuel.
